Our long-standing commitment to water conservation through the installation of high-efficiency washers (HEW’s) has helped save over 1.5 billion gallons of water since we introduced HEW’s to the campus community. To help raise environmental awareness we provide informational signage in the laundry room, but also extend our reach to students beyond the laundry room. LaundryView®, the #1 campus laundry room monitoring system, connects laundry machines to the Internet and allows students to check the availability of washers and dryers from their PC and receive Text Alerts on their cell phone when their cycle is complete. LaundryView is installed in over 2,000 laundry rooms and has the potential to reach over 400,000 students, and is the only system that provides a forum to advance the message of environmental sustainability. LaundryView also features a real-time, running tally of the water saved through high-efficiency washer usage for every laundry room and offers a variety of advice on proper laundry habits. Our in-house technology group is focused on delivering superior products that will improve the campus laundry experience by delivering the amenities students want most.
Our commitment to conservation goes well beyond the high-efficiency machines we recommend. We’ve begun a multi-year conversion of our 400+ service vans to more efficient engines, resulting in significant fuel savings across the fleet. We also utilize routing software and have equipped vans with wireless GPS devices to optimize driving routes, resulting in a 12 percent reduction in fuel consumption. In early 2009, Mac-Gray also began testing the effectiveness of using hybrid SUVs as service vehicles to further reduce the impact of our vehicle fleet. This is projected to save over 2,600 gallons of fuel and to prevent nearly 52,000 lbs. of CO2 emissions from entering our atmosphere this year alone.
